Increase in Migration Seats for 2022–23 and Increased Duration for the 485 Visa

News flash!! The new federal government has announced BIG changes to Australia’s skilled migration program. In a nutshell, if you are thinking of migrating to Australia, the 2022–23 financial year is a great time to do so!

Exciting! What are the changes?

Firstly, the number of permanent visas this financial year has increased from 160,000 to 195,000 effective immediately. Of the additional 35,000 visas, 9,000 of them have been allocated to the Regional Skill stream and 11,000 of them to the State/Territory Nominated Skill stream. This brings the Skill stream to a new total of 142,400 places and the Family stream to 52,500 places. The Special Eligibility stream remains the same at 100 places.

Secondly, post-study work rights for international students will be increased to strengthen the supply of skilled labour. This would mean that the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa for select degrees in areas of verified skill shortages will increase from:

• Select Bachelor degrees: 2 years to 4 years

• Select Master degrees: 3 years to 5 years

• Select PhDs: 4 years to 6 years

Finally, an additional $36.1 million of funding will be invested in visa processing to support 500 surge staff over the next 9 months. This should reduce processing times and backlogs!

Is it all good news?

Amidst all these positive changes, there is one matter that international students should be aware of – work hours will be capped again in June 2023. The number of hours will be decided after consultation with the relevant stakeholders to find the right balance between work and study.
